Safety is a major part of changing time – and safety is precisely what new parents focus on a lot. Materials in changing mats - what is the changing mat made of?

Most changing mats have an inner cushion made of foam, as well as a cover made of cotton or a similar material.

With some manufacturers, an extra step has been taken and certifications obtained for the material – for example, an OEKO-TEX certification for the foam mattress, while the cover is often 100 % cotton.

Other, smaller changing mats – e.g. the quilted versions or changing mats for wall-mounted tables – have padded filling that makes them comfortable while allowing the changing mat to be slim and easy to take on the go.

The changing mat cover is coated - what does it mean? and what does it do?

With most changing mats, you will find that the material has been coated. This primarily ensures that the changing mat lasts as long as possible – allowing you to easily wipe the changing mat with a damp cloth, while the changing mat material repels liquids and similar substances and thus stays looking good – and, not least, clean – throughout its lifetime.

In addition to allowing you to wipe the changing mat, the coating also means that you can most often remove the cover from the changing mat and wash it in the washing machine. However, always remember to read the changing mat cover to see what maximum temperature it can be washed at, otherwise you risk the cover either shrinking or the coating being damaged.
