A world of pacifiers

Should your little one have a pacifier? When it comes to pacifiers, there is a lot of information to consider. What type of pacifier should it be? Which material and which shape? There are many opinions regarding pacifiers, both from manufacturers and objective experts. All children are different and have different sucking needs. This varies both in terms of how much the pacifier is used by the little one and what type of pacifier it should be.

Sometimes a good number of pacifiers are bought, only to find that the pacifier is not a success with the child. At Mammashop, we have selected some pacifiers that we trust and have good experience of working and that are more readily accepted by little ones. Babies who do not get a pacifier may tend to satisfy their sucking needs with their little thumb, which is, so to speak, right at hand. It is difficult to wean a child off sucking their thumb, more difficult than weaning the child off the pacifier when the time comes, and therefore paediatricians recommend using a pacifier. However, if the child is not interested in either one, it should of course not be forced to use a pacifier.

Should the child use a pacifier?

A pacifier is a good option for stimulating the little one's sucking needs, which extend beyond when they are simply breastfeeding and hungry. Babies who do not get a pacifier may tend to stimulate their sucking needs by using their thumb instead. However, the thumb is more difficult to wean the little one off, as it is right at hand. Therefore, it is better to establish the use of a pacifier instead of getting the child used to being able to use their thumb. However, if the child does not wish to use a pacifier, it should of course not be forced.

When should the child use a pacifier?

Nowadays, the general view is that it is best to wait to give the child a pacifier until breastfeeding is established. Otherwise, there may be a possibility that the little one's sucking technique at the breast is slightly disrupted by the use of a pacifier.

Using a pacifier makes the little one relax and calms them. This option should not be taken away from the little one. The pacifier should be used for comfort or to calm them. When the little one is playing, there is no need for the pacifier.

What is the difference between a latex pacifier and a silicone pacifier?

Silicone pacifiers do not age and therefore look more hygienic than, for example, latex pacifiers. Silicone pacifiers are a synthetic material that can be used by everyone. Silicone pacifiers give off neither scent nor taste and are therefore sometimes easier to accept. However, silicone pacifiers do not withstand being bitten as much as latex and are slightly less elastic. Latex pacifiers are a soft natural material that quickly adapts to the shape and movements of the mouth. Latex pacifiers resemble the soft and warm nipple more closely. However, latex pacifiers age, as they are a natural material, and change shape as the rubber expands. The pacifiers should therefore be checked for shape, cracks, etc.

Parents who are afraid that their child has or develops a latex allergy can benefit from using a silicone pacifier. Although the connection between the use of latex pacifiers and latex allergy has not been fully established, it is a good idea to take precautions.

What shape of pacifier should you buy?

There are many different pacifiers, both in terms of shape and material. The most important Thing here is that you choose the pacifier that works for you and your child. There are round pacifiers, ergonomic pacifiers, pacifiers in solid rubber or silicone and fun pacifiers on soft toys or with cute figures on them.
